NIRMANA SOCIETY was organized in 1989 to provide logistic support for the National Campaign Committee - Construction Labour (NCC-CL) for Comprehensive Central Legislation to provide social security and labour welfare to over 20 million workers of this unorganized sector.

During the initial period, Nirmana supported campaign activities, awareness generation amongst construction workers, certain welfare activities like schools, health-care services, free legal aid, rehabilitation of J.J. Camp etc. in several slums of North-West Delhi through local donations and collaboration with other N.G.Os. It also supported the organization of six Housing and Multi-purpose co-operative Societies under "Punarvas" (Re-settlement) scheme of Slum Division of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (then Delhi Dev. Authority).

The main objective has providing logistic support for the NCC-CL campaign, became crucial from 1994. From 1994 to 1997 Nirmana obtained funds from Congregation of Unitarian Universalists- Holdeen India Program (UU-HIP) for its advocacy works on prior permission from FCRA authorities.

In 1994 Nirmana also started collaborating with Habitat Polytech and CEC on a Construction Workers Cooperative Project. In which,CEC provided research support, Habitat Polytech provided skill upgradation and funding and Nirmana provided organizational input of the cooperative formation. Nirmana got registration under FCRA in 1997 and, the funding of the last year of the Cooperative Project was also organized through Nirmana. This project was funded by Bread for the World (BfdW).

Crèche and Schools:
From the end of 1998 to Sep' 2005 the "Terre des homes", (TdH) Germany has been supporting the project for four schools and four crèches along with health care facilities to cover 80 children and 200 students. This project has a team of 15 workers and likely to be renewed shortly.

Collaboration with ILO-UNDP Project:
In 2002 NIRMANA collaborated with the International Labour Organization (ILO)-UNDP Project on construction sector study which envisaged a pilot demonstration initiative in selected, low-income locality in Delhi.

HIV/AIDs Program:
The majority of the target groups of our workers both the Construction Workers and Domestic Helpers, consist of migrant workers. Since Migrant Workers are considered to be high-risk segments threatened by HIV/AIDS, NIRMANA has been collaborating with the Delhi State AIDS Control Society for these two segments of migrant workers since last 3 years under Family Health Awareness Campaign.

From 1998 end Nirmana has also started helping a core team of young girls to form a Cooperative Society of Domestic Helpers of their own. There are over 40,000 girls from the tribal area of South Bihar and adjoining tribal areas of Madhya Pradesh and Orissa working in Delhi as "Domestic Helpers". Their main requirement is shelter in Delhi, placement linkages, health and medical care, saving system, education, legal protection, skill training for long-term settlement in their native places etc. This effort is at an initial stage and requires various collaborations with other committed groups in Delhi and in the Tribal Areas of the origin of these girls.

Nirmana support the documentary film "A Women's Place" on women, in funded by the Ford Foundation.
